- Antoinette Perry
The Tony Awards were named after early Denver resident Antoinette Perry who loomed large as a figure in American theater. Legend has it the first Tony Awards were not awards at all but rather were little gifts Perry gave to her friends out of affection.
- Gretchen Peters <GretchenPeters.com>
Purple Crayon Management provided the following bio 96 Oct. 25. It has been adapted by CAN:
Time magazine cites Gretchen Peters as one who writes with "panoramic
poignancy." Tower Records' Pulse! names her one of country music's top-10
songwriters, along with Guy Clark, Harlan Howard and Merle Haggard. The
Nashville Scene calls Gretchen a "secret weapon," a creative talent who not
only writes chart-topping songs, but who produces compositions with
career-making power. Journalist Michael McCall cites "Independence Day", an
anthem in the fight against spousal abuse, a powerful message explosively
elevated to art form. The song won 1995 honors as the Country Music
Association's Song Of The Year, took home a CMA Video of the Year award in
'94, won Song Of The Year at the 1995 Music Row Summit Awards and was
nominated for a Grammy Award. The Village Voice called Gretchen's Randy
Travis title cut, "High Lonesome", the high point of the album. George Strait
had a #1 hit with "The Chill Of An Early Fall", and her songs have been
recorded by non-country artists such as Bonnie Raitt, Bryan Adams, and Etta
James. People magazine cited Gretchen's "On A Bus To St. Cloud" as the
crowning moment of the new album by Trisha Yearwood, and Patty Loveless
topped the charts with Gretchen's second Grammy nominated song, "You Don't
Even Know Who I Am", one of the two Gretchen Peters songs on Patty's 1995 CMA
Album of the Year, and also nominated for The Academy Of Country Music's 1996
song of the year.
Gretchen's songs cover a wide range of themes and take unexpected
twists, with one constant - she always has a point of view.
Her writing instincts came naturally. Gretchen's father is an author and
network television producer, and while growing up in New York, she developed
a love of words, and what one can do with them, along with an appreciation
for the music of Jackson Browne, James Taylor, John David Souther and Gram
Parsons. Gretchen was still a teenager when she moved to Colorado and began
playing clubs in Boulder.
Gretchen was recently named "Best Nashville Songwriter" by the prestigious
Nashville Music Awards and The Nashville Scene magazine, both awards are
given to the top songwriter selected from all musical genres by the citizens
of Nashville. Her debut album, The Secret Of Life, has just been released
and is receiving tremendous reviews in major publications such as TIME,
Playboy, People, USA Today, and many others.
